A Look At Kitchen Layouts

Lucky you! You’re planning a reno or a new home build. When setting up your kitchen, the placement of your appliances can make a big difference in appliance choices and storage. Let’s compare popular kitchen layouts and how your appliances will fit in.

In a single-wall kitchen, everything lines up along one wall. It’s great for small spaces and puts appliances within easy reach.

If you’ve got a bit more room, the L-shaped kitchen uses two adjacent walls to create an “L” layout. This gives you more counter space and lets you position appliances conveniently.

The U-shaped kitchen stretches cabinets and appliances along three walls, making a “U” shape. It’s ideal for storage and lets you set up a cooking triangle that works.

If you’re looking for extra storage in your kitchen and a unique shape, the G-shaped kitchen adds a peninsula to the U-shape. This gives you more room to build in appliances, like a cooktop and wall oven, and creates larger prep areas.

For a central hub, the island kitchen puts an island in the middle, often with appliances built in. It’s fantastic for cooking, creating a family ‘hang out’ and entertaining. Perfect for additional storage and building in smaller appliances, like a microwave drawer.

Similarly, the peninsula kitchen extends from a wall like an island connected to cabinets. Perfect for adding appliances to create the working triangle plus the peninsula is terrific for creating separation in open spaces.

No matter the layout, remember to arrange appliances so you have an easy flow between the fridge, stove, and dishwasher. Counter space around the appliances is essential, and remember important details like good lighting and ventilation. Design your kitchen with your cooking style in mind for the best results!
