Tips for Dryer Fire Prevention

Clean Your Lint Filter – Be sure to clean your lint filter after every use. You may choose to clean it before or after every use. Not only does this prevent fires but it helps your laundry dry faster.

Clean Your Dryer Vent – It is recommended you disconnect the duct to the dryer and  clean it out regularly to prevent blockage. Check regularly to make sure nests of small animals and insects are not blocking the outside vent. You may notice that your clothes are not drying as fast as they were in the beginning, this is a sign of a blockage in your venting.

Use Approved Aluminium Venting- Despite its popular use for many years, plastic duct is not suitable for installation and is not approved by most building codes. It is recommended you use Semi Rigid Aluminum Ducting or Slim Ducting.

Install A Smoke Alarm – If you are running a gas dryer, you should consider installing a smoke / carbon monoxide detector in your laundry area.

Keep The Area Around The Unit Clean- Make sure there are is no clothing, boxes or anything on top/in the area of your dryer as this will provide fuel to the fire in the event that a lint fire occurs.
